Who are Magpie Dance?

We are the leading dance charity for children and adults with learning disabilities. Through dance, participants gain life, social and communication skills with added health and wellbeing benefits.

Founded in 1985 by Avril Hitman BEM, Magpie Dance has always focused on ability and not disability. 35 years on, this remains vital to our values and approach, which has seen the company grow from one 45-minute weekly session to currently offering over 20 programmes each year enabling over 450 people with learning disabilities to access dance.

You can find out more about our ethos on our website.

How can I support more of Magpie Dance?

You can make a donation online, you can become a Friend by donating on a regular monthly basis, or you can volunteer. We have a variety of volunteering opportunities available such as desk research, HR, travel companion, design, marketing, web and of course, helping in sessions. As a small charity we gratefully receive donations of time and money.

Can I dance with Magpie Dance?

Yes! We run a number of weekly term-time sessions. Most are inclusive sessions for people with learning disabilities. We also run some sessions that are open to the with and without a learning disability (such as body conditioning on Friday and other drop in sessions). Visit our website to find out more about the sessions we run: Weekly classes.
